People are forever complaining that "kids today are disrespectful!" but what they fail to acknowledge is that respect is taught.  Having respectful children is an intentional act.  It is not luck of the draw.

Veteran's Day is a great opportunity to give your children a lesson in respect and gratitude.  All of us know someone in our community that has or is serving in the armed forces.  These men and women unselfishly sacrifice so that the rest of us can enjoy freedom.  Here are a few ideas you can do with your kids this Veteran's Day.

Draw patriotic pictures and deliver them:
  • Bake cookies
  • Take dinner
  • Write a note
  • Mow a lawn
  • Wash a car

My point is that I want you to actually DO something.  Do not just talk about it.  Have the kids use their own words and actions to express gratitude.  Teach them to look the person in the eye and say "Thank you".  Respect starts at home.  Start today.  Start now.
