The Gift That Keeps On Giving

I am a practical gift giver by nature.  If you are having a baby, I will get you diapers.  If you are getting married, I will get you dishes.  If your child is having a birthday, I will get them fun pj's.  It is what I do.  So when someone asks me what my kids want for a gift, the first place my head goes is to something practical, but because I don't want to see their sad faces when they open up socks and underwear I have found a solution that thrills us both.

Our kids are blessed with grandparents who get them what I consider big ticket items.  A few years ago I realized that the toy they purchased #1 for his birthday was the same price as a family zoo membership.  Well, this was a no-brainer for me.  When Christmas rolled around and they asked for a list of gift ideas I included the different memberships that our family would enjoy.  Not only did I love this option but it turns out they where excited about it too.  The idea of giving the kids a gift that would provide an ongoing experience was really appealing.

It has been several years since we started requesting memberships and now we are in full-swing of the benefits.  We have memberships to the zoo, aquarium, children's museum, and some other fun local places. I try to text or Facebook a picture to the giver during our visits so that they can see the kids enjoy the membership throughout the year.

I know that celebrations are not all about the gifts, but if gifts are going to be part of the event, I highly recommend putting memberships on your wish list!
